A BLEEDING NATION, NIGERIA

Just two decades ago, my motherland was an emblem of love, peace and unity. There was sanctity, economic progress, near zero cases of bribery and corruption, quality education, adequate basic social amenities and agricultural boom. It was a pride to chant our melodious national anthem:

"Arise O Compatriots,
Nigeria call, Obey;
To serve our fatherland,
With love and strength and faith;
The labour of our heroes past,
Shall never be in vain,
To serve with heart and might;
One nation bound in FREEDOM,
PEACE and UNITY.

It is so unfortunate that our founding fathers never envisaged the nation crumbling into a state of apathy and disarray. Our heroes past who fought for our independence from the British Colony never knew that someday, the nation they jeopardized their lives for, would one day be sitting on a keg of gunpowder.
Apparently, the labour of our heroes past has turned out to be in vain and we are now in chains and disharmony.
Today, corrupt practices in government and religious differences have paved a way for terrorism which has turn the country into shreds. Terrorism is now the order of the day in Nigeria.

A group of dreaded-evil insurgents called Boko Haram has vowed to make the nation uninhabitable. They fight against western education and as of now, the North-Eastern part of the country has almost been taken over by them.
There has been concerted effort by the military to combat these insurgents but all has seemingly proved abortive.

I do hope for a brighter future for my generation and the unborn generation. Children born into Nigeria of today are experiencing the opposite of what a peaceful nation should be.
I am optimistic however, that through the intervention of God, my nation has hope of getting better. This can only be possible when citizens learn to be patriotic and desist from acts of corruption, violence, nepotism and engage in peaceful talks to re-enact the foregone peace and unity our founding fathers prided in.
Let us unanimously make peace a universal language!
